Trying Something NEW This Year…

As someone who’s business almost relys solely on the success of their social media, I’m always trying to figure out what I can do to cater to the alogorithm and ensure that my posts do well. With that being said, I’ve done almost everything I can to stay away from making and posting TikToks/Reels. Maybe it’s my age showing, but I have been very reluctant to accept the fact that platforms like Instagram, an app initially created to share PHOTOS, has now transitioned into a predominantly short-form video centered space. However, this year I’ve decided to bite the bullet and do what needs to be done in order to succeed, and if that means creating cringy videos for TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, so be it.

I’ve done a very good job staying consistent with a 3-post per session trend on my Instagram. If you’re not sure what I mean, I’m referring to 3 back-to-back posts from the same wedding/session so that when someone comes to my page, there is a consistent and uniform look to the profile, and not just random posts here and there.

What I’ve decided to do this year is after every 3-posts from a session, I’m going to post 3 reels back-to-back, hoping that the algorithm will at the very least push that content to new people and bring them back to my profile to see what really matters, my photos. For now, my videos will continue to be these funny “relatable” memes that either other photographers will relate to, or my clients will. I’ve noticed that posting funny and relatable content tends to perform better than a high-level production video I’ve spent hours working on. Posting this way will also allow me to remain consistent with the clean and unfirom look I’ve worked so hard to create on my profile, while also sharing both photos AND video.

It’s obviously way too early to tell if this will work, but hopefully I’ll be able to look back at this post a year from now and provide some insight on to whether or not this master plan of mine actually worked. Let me know if you think this is either a good idea or bad idea! What things are you trying to do differently this year on social media? I’m looking forward to hearing from some of you! See you next week. - Matt
